Vocational Skills: Economic Development
Curing a person affected by leprosy with multi drug
therapy is only one part of overcoming the disease.
Regardless of the level of disability, a young person
like Laxmi could be excluded from her family and
community for the rest of her life. Left with nothing, it
is very difficult to survive, let alone challenge the stigma.
The Leprosy Mission’s Vocational Training Centres,
throughout India, offer the chance to learn a useful,
popular trade. Each student can then earn themselves
a living – a pivotal step in overcoming both the poverty
and stigma of leprosy.
Courses on offer
Vocational training includes a choice of the following
trades, all of which are in demand:
electrician;motor vehicle
mechanic; driving; cutting & sewing, including clothes,
toys, and embroidery; refrigeration & air-conditioning mechanic; data processing & computer applications.
Additional services to help each student include:
employment support; business skills; on-the-job
training; supervised study in the evenings, and
specialist counselling.
