Facts and Figures at a Glance!

Statistics:

• Leprosy IS curable!
• Leprosy is NOT classified as a highly contagious disease
• 1 person every 2 minutes is diagnosed with leprosy, every day
• In India there is a leprosy disability rate on diagnose of 37.3%
• The WHO elimination target is 1 case per 10,000
• The Leprosy Mission organisation internationally is based in 53 countries and works in 31
• In 1985 5.2 million were diagnosed with leprosy - since 2004 the numbers are closer to 250,000 (WHO)
• The Leprosy Mission New Zealand has 19 New Zealand based staff, a group of loyal volunteers who help us almost monthly, and support groups around the country who help in a multitude of ways
• Total income for TLMNZ year ended 30 June 2008 was $4,326,702
• Total expenditure and remittances for Project and Field work of TLMNZ for year ended 30 June 2008 was $3,655,783
• In 2009 human remains were found in India dated 2000BC that showed signs of leprosy

World Health Organisation Statistics on Leprosy:

• Official reports from 118 countries states cases detected during 2007 was 254,525+
• The number of cases has fallen by 11,000 (4%) compared to 2006
• Over the past 20 years more than 14 million people have been cured of leprosy
• Countries that still register as high endemicity (over 1 case per 10,000 population) include:  Angola, Brazil, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nepal, United Republic of Tanzania

People not Statistics!

The Leprosy Mission New Zealand's Mandate clearly indicates that those affected by leprosy are people not numbers, that everyone is equal and therefore should be ensured the right to a life of dignity.

Excerpts from the 2009 -2012 Strategic Plan:

"....It is an offer of partnership, an offer to join hands with our supporters and others in eradicating the causes and consequences of leprosy and fighting for justice and dignity. "

"...We are continually informed and inspired by the resilience, ingenuity and struggles of people experiencing leprosy, disability and social exclusion, and the communities in which we work.  Our resolve is constantly strengthened by the progress, be it big or small, that people experiencing leprosy make in claiming and expanding their voices, choices and rights towards a dignified life."

"We walk beside those affected by leprosy, helping where we can remembering always the plea, "please don't talk about us and make decision for us, without us".
