This gift of a dairy cow is of tremendous benefit to a person affected by leprosy. The cow loyally provides nutritious milk, a form of transport, manure for crops, and the chance to overcome the debilitating stigma of leprosy. This gift also includes training in animal husbandry, and support in setting up a sustainable business.

In India, when Nirmala Devi's husband found out she had leprosy, he deserted her. She was devastated, but she joined a self-help group, and uses her gift of a cow to transport the milk it produces each day to the city, where it fetches a higher price. She has now married again, and has a two-year-old son, who loves to help look after the cow.
