This gift of a buffalo is of tremendous benefit to a person affected by leprosy, and their family. The buffalo loyally provides nutritious milk, a form of transport, manure for crops, and the chance to overcome the debilitating stigma of leprosy. This gift also includes training in animal husbandry, and support in setting up a sustainable business.

Part of the family

Jan Kidevi and her family, from the poor Muzaffapur region of India, were delighted to receive a buffalo from The Leprosy Mission. The family sell the seven litres of milk produced by the buffalo each day to people in the nearby city, where they receive a good price. Altogether they earn up to NZ$30 a month - a fantastic contribution to their household income.
