The early 1990's saw a significant change to the way in which eradicating the causes and consequences of leprosy was taking place: the emergence of grassroots leprosy organisations.
These organisations represent those who have experienced leprosy and the human rights abuses and stigma that are so often associated with the disease.
Grassroots groups have gradually formalised themselves and gained registration within their own countries as Non Government Organisations. This is a remarkable achievement for each of these groups and we honour them for having the courage and fortitude to reach this goal despite the obstacles which we know they encountered along the way.
The Leprosy Mission New Zealand endeavours to work with organisations and individuals who share similar values and views towards the needs of those affected by leprosy and discrimination, and the methods in which to best address these needs.
Often local Leprosy Mission offices and local health centres work in partnership to ensure that government initiatives are strengthened. Local health care for example can gain knowledge and support by being in partnership with The Leprosy Mission offices.
Additionally there are many wonderful NGO's from almost every country in the world who work towards the development of those countries that need a little or a lot of assistance. Sometimes in the capacity of providing funding for projects that address an urgent need for aid, and ranging through to assisting in advocating governments for policy change.
