OUR PROGRAMMES - Nepal

Leprosy remains a significant health problem in Nepal – a population where the majority are subsistence farmers, the prevalence rate is 2.4 cases per 10,000 population (WHO 2003), above the World Health Organisation elimination target.

Poverty, the stigma of leprosy and poor access to healthcare all contribute to the high rate of leprosy.

Nepal

Bara District

Bara District has been one of the most leprosy affected districts in Nepal. This project is designed to empower and improve the social and economic environment of leprosy and other disabled people and those who have been socially excluded - the Dalits or untouchables. The project, which only started in July 2005, has been focussing on the formation of 10 self help groups in each of the 10 communities.
