OUR PROGRAMMES - Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, TLM supports the Ethiopian National Association of Ex-Leprosy Patients, ENAELP.

The organisation's vision is to see a stigma-free society, where isolation and discrimination are eliminated. They work to ensure people affected by leprosy and their families are fully integrated into society. A common goal is to see all members live in dignity, free from poverty, and participate in the economic social and political life of Ethiopia.

Thousands of Ethiopian people suffer from the stigma of leprosy with devastating socio-economic results. These people are usually the poorest of the poor, and are often socially excluded.

Zenbe Work Income Generation

This project, now in its fi fth year, seeks to provide self employment opportunities for people affected by leprosy in the large leprosy settlement of Zenbe Work on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. Some 600 families have been involved to date. The project is making a real difference to the leprosy affected families in the community and giving them the opportunity to escape poverty.

Rift Valley Income Generation

This project is located in another leprosy settlement 250km from Addis Ababa in an arid part of the rift valley of Ethiopia. Initially the project was designed to provide income generation opportunities for the people in the settlement but has been extended to include education assistance at the request of the local people. The community is remote and the nearest secondary school is 75km away. These leprosy affected families are very keen for their children to receive an education.

ENAELP Capacity Building

ENAELP – Ethiopian National Association of Ex Leprosy Patients – continues to grow and address the needs of its members. In late 2004 ENAELP undertook a major five year strategic planning study and set some ambitious but achievable targets for the organisation to reach by 2010. In order to do this the Regional Associations will need to be more involved with the operations of the National Office in Addis Ababa and changes to the ENAELP structure have been made to enable this to happen.
