OUR PROGRAMMES - China

TLM works alongside HANDA, a local NGO of people affected by leprosy working in the Guangdong and Guangxi provinces in south and southwest China.

HANDA works to promote dignity and respect amongst those affected by leprosy, to advocate for equal rights, and to improve public understanding of the disease.

Through support networks, meetings, publications, newsletters and practical skill building, HANDA aims to empower and encourage people with leprosy to live economically independent lives and to regain their dignity.

HANDA Capacity Building

This project is designed to enable HANDA to serve the thousands of leprosy affected people isolated in leprosy colonies and villages throughout Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces. In 2005, 32 leprosy villages in Guangdong and 25 leprosy villages in Guangxi have joined HANDA. These new members increase HANDA’s membership in Guangdong province to 1,528 and 341 in Guangxi province. Stigma against leprosy is high in this part of China so HANDA has been undertaking health education and community awareness in 70 communities in the two provinces.
