Nalini's story
I have had leprosy since I was 11. Every day for three years I tried to hide it, because I have seen how others have been treated. But then the light patches started to spread to my face and arms. I was horrified.
Everything I had feared came true. My friends turned their backs on me, and the school door was locked against me. My father lost his job as a rickshaw driver when word spread that I had leprosy. I have three brothers and two sisters. The youngest is four years old. I don't know what the future holds for us.
Through The Leprosy Mission, Nalini was provided with multi-drug therapy - the drugs that cure leprosy. But the drugs alone do not overcome the physical disability so often caused by leprosy, or the injustice of the social stigma and discrimination. There is so much more that must be done in overcoming people's fears and reactions to this ancient disease.
