What does Seed Partners Nepal support?

In conjunction with the inhabitants of Terai, The Leprosy Mission has conducted a study of their needs in order to enact true and lasting development within the region. In this new programme, The Leprosy Mission works with local-government and non-governmental organisations to affect social change and social reformation within this region.

Leprosy & Health

Programmes to raise awareness of leprosy and how it relates to Health and Sanitation are being implemented. These programmes include advocacy to eliminate social discrimination for people affected by leprosy. These activities are practical and often unique programmes can include events such as street dramas, door-to-door campaigning, and the use of posters and leaflets.

Consciousness on health and hygiene is being improved by initiating Mobile Health Clinic programmes, Health and Hygiene education, as well as the distribution of support materials to physically disabled persons (from leprosy-related reasons and otherwise), family-planning and reproductive health. There will also be the construction of low-cost latrines for improved sanitation.

Income Generation

Many people in Terai are landless - this is turn leads to a lack of ability to make any investments. As a result, income and employment generating programmes are being enacted. These programmes provide skill development training such as plumbing, masonry and carpentry, amongst many others. Similarly, financial support for animal farming and small business through the provision of loans at discount rates through Self-Help Groups, that collectively save money and provide loans to group members.

Education

Education is a very important factor for change. Without education, people cannot reach their full potential. They cannot run for political office, they cannot stand up for their human rights, nor can they gain any real skills. Within Terai, there is a Basic Education Program for both young people of primary age and over, all the way through to adult ages provided. Inhabitants of Terai will be encouraged to send their children through these education programmes in order to help them escape deprivation.

Community Development

This programme is a Community Development Program with a strong emphasis on the empowerment of women. This program is made an especially high priority in areas where the status of women is traditionally low. Women's activities within the household tend to be limited because of their traditional responsibilities to their family, and because of the traditions of female seclusion also.
