The Leprosy Mission New Zealand is committed to staying focused on helping people with leprosy until the disease is fully eradicated. To do this, we need long term support from donors through the Leprosy Mission Global Partner’s Programme.

What do Global Seed Partners support?
Disasters can strike any time and anywhere, affecting the poor so much harder than people in developed countries who benefit from stronger buildings and better infrastructure. For the poor who also suffer from leprosy - including disability and marginalisation - the impact of a natural disaster is even worse. Such is the fear of leprosy in some places that people known to have the disease are prevented from participating in general emergency relief. While continuing to fight leprosy stigma in its general work, The Leprosy Mission is always on board to meet emergency needs of leprosy affected people, their families and communities in times of disaster. GSP donations are a vital source of funding that can be dispatched quickly to a disaster-hit area.
The work of the Leprosy Mission spans a wide range of international activities including community development, advocacy, micro enterprise, Education for Life and capacity building. Many of these initiatives are supported through our Global Partners programme. However, The Leprosy Mission supports people living in poverty in a number of other ways that don’t directly affect individual communities, but go to ‘where most needed’. It is inevitable that natural disasters happen frequently and have tragic effects upon peoples’ lives. We cannot build funding for this into a regular Global Partners programme as no one knows where the next disaster will strike. This is where you, as a GSP, can become invaluable to our work.
GSP have helped out in:
- The Niger Famine Crisis
The Danja Hospital in Niger is receiving ongoing assistance from The Leprosy Mission not only because of its focus on care for people affected by leprosy, but also on humanitarian grounds due to the extreme famine that has heavily affected the country. Approximately 10,000 people are covered by the hospital that deals with the effects of severe malnutrition and other hunger-related health problems.
- The 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami
Many communities - whether affected by leprosy or not - in Southern India were badly affected by the
Tsunami. The Leprosy Mission has been working to provide temporary and permanent housing, post-trauma counselling services, orphaned children care, and Savings and Loan Groups to help longer-term rehabilitation of the economy in these areas.
- Darfur Region, Sudan
Within the war-torn Darfur region, many people affected by leprosy have been caught up in the middle of the continuing violence. People affected by leprosy denied shelter in refugee camps have gathered in isolated
settlements in the villages of El Geneina, El Fasher, and Mayo to fend for themselves. The Leprosy Mission is working with these people to improve housing, sanitation and health education to help them ward off
disease and improve their quality of life.
- Bangladesh & India Floods
These countries are regularly affected by flooding and tropical storm damage. As both countries have a significant population affected by leprosy, The Leprosy Mission already has significant staff and infrastructure in place to help avoid flood-related problems such as the spread of disease, and prolonged, widespread homelessness amongst the greater population.
The GSP programme covers these kinds of costs that cannot be built into the Global programmes but also enables the day to day running of Leprosy Mission work. Like all organisations, The Leprosy Mission New Zealand needs to cover operating costs and staff wages. Additionally, as leprosy education within New Zealand is typically quite low, it is vital that the Leprosy Mission advocates for the cause of leprosy eradication within the country in order to let people know the genuine need that people affected by leprosy have.
