What does the Partner’s Programme support?

The ongoing violence in Darfur has been described by the United Nations as the world's worst humanitarian disaster. Since 2003 when the crisis began, over 300,000 people have been murdered or died from poverty-related causes brought about by the disaster. Furthermore, over 2 Million people made homeless, resorting to flee to neighbouring regions of Sudan or bordering countries such as Chad or Ethiopia rather than face roaming groups of militia that rape and murder with impunity within Darfur. As a result, up to 10,000 people will die every month within this region.

Against this troubled scenario is the problem of reaching people affected by leprosy. Inevitably, people affected by leprosy are the poorest of the poor and are society's most vulnerable. People affected by leprosy seeking shelter within Displaced Persons' Camps have routinely been turned away simply because they have at one stage had leprosy - though they no longer have leprosy, they are still refused entry and are forced to find shelter in remote leprosy settlements with a very low quality of life.

Mayo Housing Project

On the outskirts of the Sudanese capital of Khartoum lies the hopelessly poor district of Mayo. Within Mayo lies a leprosy settlement, home to people affected by leprosy who have been refused entry to refugee camps solely for their disease. Here The Leprosy Mission is currently building brick housing to replace older shantyhouses made up of sticks and old sack-cloth. Sanitation systems are being installed to improve general health and reduce vulnerability to disease, while a Community Health programme will help the inhabitants of the Mayo settlement to practice good hygiene.
