What does Global Partners Faizabad support?
Education for Life
In an area where making ends meet is never guaranteed, people affected by leprosy have a far harder time. People who have had leprosy or come from a family with a member who has had it are typically discriminated against when trying to find employment. The Faizabad Education for Life programme hands these people work opportunities denied to them by others.
Education For Life caters to 120 students aged 15-30 by providing scholarships for job training to teach them to take up a trades such as:
Tailoring - Clothing Manufacture and Repair.
Diesel Mechanic - The ability to effectively repair truck and car engines.
Motorcycle Repair - In a country where motorcycles are very common, to be able to repair these for a business is very lucrative.
Computer Literacy - The computer and IT industry in India is on the boom, and training here helps a student take part.
Air Conditioning Repair - good business in a country where 40-degree days are normal in summer!
These skills taught at the Faizabad Vocational Training Centre (VTC) help people to learn a skill that they can rely on for life to support both themselves and their family. The skills learned through this school help them avoid a life of backbreaking bonded labour to local sugar cane farms that would otherwise be their likely fate.
Small-Business Loans
People who come to VTC Faizabad have a wide range of backgrounds - most have had leprosy and been treated successfully, or have come from homes where a parent or guardian had been disabled by leprosy. In
either instance, they are without a doubt poor and unable to support themselves. Upon the completion of the course however, there is opportunity for the provision of small loans to help a student start their own business using the skills they have learned. This programme helps students out of the crippling cycle of poverty, and thus eliminates the primary cause of leprosy, as well as the many other diseases endemic to the area.
Health Education Programmes
The Faizabad centre is the focal point for health education programmes that provide the community with knowledge on how to detect signs of leprosy and other diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and dysentery as well as vital knowledge on how to avoid contracting these.
