Leprosy and Stigma Reduction Project

We have worked together with the Leprosy Mission Bangladesh to implement a new Leprosy Stigma Reduction Project over the next five years and they are relying on New Zealanders to fund it.  Curing at least 770 men, women and children from leprosy each year is a very important goal of this project. The total cost to cure one person, including helping each one to support and rebuild their life, is just $432.

"Curing" someone of leprosy is so much more than providing medication.  Ongoing support enables people experiencing leprosy to go through each of the challenging stages of the cure (click through to diagram), gaining self-respect and being respected by others, in their journey towards a life of dignity.

People experiencing leprosy are up against some of the toughest challenges imaginable, and yet they are amongst some of the most courageous, inspirational people.

It cannot be emphasised enough how important a gift to Cure One person will be to plan for the future of the Leprosy and Stigma Reduction Project, and to save on administration and fundraising costs. This Project does not receive funding from any other source and is relying on New Zealanders for support.  It also has a very integral component which is designed to help the Bangladeshi government integrate leprosy detection and treatment into mainstream healthcare: integration will no longer perpetuate the stigma of leprosy.

Your gifts will be sent directly to help people like Nalini and Saira, and build a future free from leprosy stigma and discrimination in the world's third poorest country.
