New Zealand is a country of more
than 4,000,000 people - imagine the roar should we stand together
and raise our voices to advocate for the rights of those affected
by leprosy, stigma and injustice! We CAN make a
difference. Help us increase the volume and reach of our
united voice.
All of our projects abroad have strong advocacy components.
Advocacy within New Zealand, however, is relatively new for
us. Yet there is much we can do. We can ensure that our decision
makers:
-
Continue to support the work we do
-
Allow us access to the countries where we work
-
Develop policies on human rights that are in the best interests of those they are designed to protect
Because we never know what the future holds, we must be ready to act when the need arises.
-
We can help partners around the world have their voices heard
-
We can urge our own government to address the injustices we see
-
As informed New Zealanders we can recognize injustice; we can make a stand when we learn of discrimination and suffering
-
We can inform those around us of the stigma and discrimination experienced by people affected by the causes and consequences of leprosy.
-
Learn and then share your knowledge with church groups, the community, friends, family and colleges

Advocacy Team
The Advocacy Team is a group of like-minded, motivated supporters
who are willing to answer the call to action. 'Action' can
mean a number of things: mass emailings, petitions, letters or
direct contact with local MPs, or sharing knowledge through forums
and events. Each action on its own may sound inconsequential, but
together they can have a significant influence on others.
The Leprosy Mission New Zealand's Advocacy Team is motivated by the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) with the understanding that working
together it is possible to make a real difference on behalf of
those who face injustices from an association with leprosy.
We CAN make a difference. Help us increase the volume and
reach of our united voice and make a stand against injustice!
